I was reading a story yesterday about Jared from Subway. Before he created his Subway diet, he weighed 425 pounds and was drinking 15 to 20 sodas a day.

The gold card will give you exclusive savings, both online and in store. This is definitely worth a trip to GNC to look for.

My mom helps me out a lot for reviews. She also gets better presents every holiday because she asks for stuff. My dad just asks for happy kids (we try to tell him that’s a lost cause, but it’s all he ever wants). Sometimes, though, he wants new sneakers.

So when Famous Footwear emailed about being in Drugstore Divas’ Father’s Day gift guide, I knew I would ask him to do the review. Who better to do a look at sneakers that a dad would want than my dad.

So I called him.

Me: “Dad, can I ask you for a favor?”
Him: “Depends.”
Me: “Can I hire you to work for me?”
Him: Silence.
Me: “I can pay you in sneakers.”

So I explain the entire thing to him, how he has to go online and find any pair of shoes on the site. “As long as it’s under $xx with shipping, you’re good,” I said.

Him: “What if I find two pairs and it’s under that price?”
Me: “That’s fine too.”

He took a week to check out his options, which was surprising since my dad usually gravitates to the same sneakers. My dad isn’t someone who procrastinates, so I know the trouble was he had too many options.

I did get worried that maybe my dad was taking so long because he couldn’t navigate the site. He’s not the biggest tech guy, and I was wondering if the site was giving him issues. Not the case. The site is really easy to navigate. He was even able to guide me to his perfect shoes by directing me to the links over the phone. Usually that’s a project, but Famous Footwear’s website is so easy to get around.

My dad was looking around and wanted to pick up arch supports. I bought him a pair last time I went shoe shopping at Famous Footwear. I told him it was a present. Arches, well, they’re not really an exciting gift but they sure are a useful one.

He looked for the ones I had bought him, but they weren’t online. In fact, the one pair online was just about $45. So he had to cross those off the list. There are a lot more options in Famous Footwear stores, but my dad was shopping online (since I had the gift cards here in North Carolina). I would definitely think it would be in the brand’s best interest to add a few more options online, since people like my dad definitely would buy them.

Instead, he decided to buy sneakers.

If you know my dad, you know he has a very specific sneaker style. I think most people do but my dad has not strayed from his style ever. I didn’t check Famous Footwear’s website before asking him to do the review, but I did cross my fingers and say a prayer to the shoe gods that Famous Footwear had my dad’s style among its array of shoes.

When he called me today to tell me his choice, I was happy to see that he found his exact style. He picked the New Balance Men’s 609 V2X Medium cross-trainers. My dad goes walking at the trail at the local lake very often (including on New Year’s Day) and he goes to the gym all the time. His sneakers do get worn out, so it’s great that he was able to find another pair.

He had a bit of credit left over, so he went through, looking for socks. He went through quite a few pairs (there are a ton on the site) before he decided on the Nike Men’s 6pk quarter socks in white. He said they were a little expensive (they’re $17.99 for six pairs), but he’s excited about his choice.

Pete made a lentil soup not too long ago and he wanted to top it with croutons. We didn’t have any because we have not once bought croutons since moving here.

So he made them himself.

They were amazing. So good that I we were eating them straight out of the bowl.

When he needed croutons for our stuffed tomatoes recipe last week, it was a no brainer. He was going to make homemade croutons. It’s so simple, it’s a wonder people actually pay for this.

What You’ll Need:

Slice of bread (it can be old bread, it can be fresh bread; it doesn’t matter)
Parsley
Garlic
Seasoning to taste (pepper, salt, Italian seasoning, whatever you want)
Olive oil

What You’ll Do:

Cut the bread into slices, in both directions, creating cubes. This, honestly, is the hardest part of the process.

Put the cubes in a bowl and top with fresh garlic and parsley (if you don’t have parsley, you can skip it).

Drizzle with olive oil.

Top with your choice of spices. Mix.

Bake on a foil lined cookie sheet at 350-degrees until browned.

That’s all.

Pete and I, if you didn’t know, are from New York and we moved to North Carolina in 2012. Whenever someone asks me how it is, the first thing I always say is, “I love the weather.”

I do. It’s what I love most about living down here.

We go to the beach at least once a weekend, so often that we have it down to a science. And at least one afternoon a week, we’re lounging at the pool in our complex. It’s not even Father’s Day yet and I have the darkest tan that I’ve ever had in my life.

We really do take advantage of the weather, but we don’t take enough advantage of our deck. We have a patio/deck off our living room. It’s gorgeous. I’ve taken a blanket out there and sat out a few times but what we really needed were chairs.

But our priorities are saving for the wedding over chairs, so we haven’t picked up any. When Brylane Home told me about the outdoor promotion it was having, I knew I wanted to review a pair of chairs. I picked the Foldable Rocking Chairs (which list at $179.99, but are on sale for $89.99).

I was working when my cousin was here, so she decided to take a run to the mall. It was her last day in town, so she wanted to do a little shopping.

When she walked out the door, she yelled, “Do you know that you have two really big boxes out here?”

Oh my chairs had arrived.

Since I’m a wimp, there was no way I was able to carry the boxes from the front door to the back without assistance, so she had to help me. We opened the boxes outside, and they came in two pieces.

We could definitely put these together, I thought.

There is a hole in each piece that must align perfectly in order for you to get the plastic peg inside. Each chair comes with two pegs, and that’s the entire assembly.

My cousin got her side in first and I was having trouble with my side. Call it damsel in distress syndrome. My cousin came to my side (totally unaware that I was photographing the back of her head) and got the peg in.

She then did both the pegs on the other chair while I held onto it. She tried banging them in with her hand (since the box states no tools required), but she couldn’t get it in all the way.

“Don’t worry,” I told her. “I’ll just get Pete to do it when he gets home.”

So off to the mall she went, and I tried to push the peg in.

Wasn’t happening for me either. It was hard and I’m weak. I told Pete and he so easily just popped the peg in, but very nicely told me that, “it was a little difficult.”

It wasn’t, but he was just trying to be nice.

What’s nice, actually, are the chairs.

They are of a resin design, according to the description. Small aside here: I always thought resin was a wood. When I look at reception venues for our wedding, they always charge an additional $3.50 for a resin chair, which I know are the white chairs. I thought they were wood, since resin comes from a tree, but these are made of a durable plastic. So I’m confused.

The chairs are weather proof and will not warp in the rain or snow (not that we have snow here in North Carolina) and they won’t crack in the cold. They won’t peel since, well, there’s no paint to peel.

They’re really great outdoors chairs. Almost every evening, you’ll find me and Pete sitting outside on them, playing the stereo, just enjoying the outdoors. It’s so nice, so relaxing, and such an amazing thing that we’ve been missing out on for the last year since we didn’t have chairs.

My cousin even got a chance to sit on the chair and model it for me when she was here.

It’s actually a rocking chair, which is awesome. There’s something about sitting on the porch and swaying that is just so soothing.

We have really great weather here, so we were just enjoying the chairs, having coffee on them on weekend mornings, not really putting them to the test.

And then my cousin left.

And the rain came.

It started pouring. You can see the rain in the background of the photo to the right. I actually took a photo of the chair drenched in water, puddles of it on the seat, but you couldn’t really tell once I uploaded it. But the chairs were champs and didn’t get ruined at all.

I was pretty impressed, but even more so when we had a tornado warning a few days ago. I brought the plants in because we were potentially going to get hit by Andrea. I left everything else on the deck because the chairs weren’t really fragile.

And then 1:30am hit and I got an alert for a tornado warning. I was at my work chair with Pete sleeping on the futon, imagining 45 mph winds picking up these chairs and smashing them into our glass door. So I got up, brought our plant table inside, and then looked at the chairs.

“Please fold up easily,” I said to them.

See, the chairs are foldable, which is great for storage, but I hadn’t actually folded them up before. I took a deep breath, and hoped for the best.

To my genuine surprise, the chairs folded up very easily and I was able to put them in our storage room, off the side of our deck, without having to wake Pete. Damsel in distress no more.

The chairs fit easily in our storage area, which they never would have done if they didn’t fold. I was really impressed.

We brought the chairs back out in the morning and haven’t had any bad weather since, but it’s great to know that if we do have any trouble, these chairs can stand up to it.
